Jim Warner joined the firm following graduation from the University of Pennsylvania (B.A., political science, 1959) and the University of Virginia School of Law (J.D. 1962). He became a director of the firm in 1970 and a shareholder in 1971, has served as a member of the Executive Committee, and currently serves as chairman of the Real Estate Section. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Tennessee (1962), the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee (1962), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit (1965).

While his practice has included litigation, probate, trust and estates, and family law matters, for more than twenty years Jim has concentrated in the areas of commercial real estate, corporate, and general commercial law. He represents developers, shopping center owners, banks and other institutional lenders, landlords and tenants in all aspects of the acquisition, development, financing, leasing, and operation of retail shopping centers and malls, office buildings, warehouses, industrial sites, and other commercial properties. Elected to the American College of Real Estate Lawyers in 1984, Jim has also been an associate member of the International Council of Shopping Centers since 1983. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for more than ten years.

Jim has lectured on commercial and real estate law topics for programs sponsored by the University of Tennessee School of Law, the Tennessee Bar Association, and the Memphis Bar Association, and is the Tennessee Section Contributor for the State-By-State Guide to Commercial Real Estate Leases (Aspen Publishers, Mark A. Senn, Editor).

He is a member of the American, Tennessee, and Memphis (Director, 1979) Bar Associations, and is a Fellow of both the American and Tennessee Bar Foundations.

Jim's community and civic activities include service as member of the Vestry (1985-87, 1990-92, Senior Warden 1986-87, Junior Warden 1992) of Church of the Holy Communion (Episcopal) in Memphis, member of the Board of Directors (1983-89, 1993-96) of Bridges, Inc. (formerly Youth Service in Memphis, Inc.), and as a member of the Board of Trustees (1986-94, Chairman 1992-94) of St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis.

In 1963 Jim joined the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Incorporated (the Barbershop Harmony Society), and has been involved ever since both as a performer with the Memphis Chapter chorus and local quartets, and as an officer at the chapter, district and international levels. He served on the Society's Board of Directors from 1984-93, and as International President in 1988. Since 1979 he has been a member of the Society's Governance and Bylaws Committee (formerly, Laws and Regulations Committee), and has served as chairman since 1989. From 1990-2001, he served as a trustee of Harmony Foundation International, Inc., and as President from 1996-2000. Currently he serves, pro bono, as General Counsel to the Foundation.
